what do you need to start painting?
ok I want to make a special gift to my mother, she has never studied arts or something but she’s a very talented creature. I want to give her a painting set, so she can get rid of stress while having some time for her own.
She has some experience since she did pottery and ceramic for quite some years.
What I need to know is what to buy, what kind of paint, brushes and stuff, and how much it will cost.

Sign her up for a painting class. Most communities will have many offerings from community college non-credit courses to guilds for watercolorists, oil, and acrylic painters. These are usually inexpensive and available at varied locations and times. It is best to determine if she has an interest before you spend any money.
Prices will range between $50.00 to $100.00+ for decent to good watercolor or acrylic materials and $75.00++ for oil. Find a Fine Art Supplier, not Michaels or JoAnne (Aaron Brothers might be OK) and ask someone knowledgeable for help. Online stores like Cheap Joes or Daniel Smith are not set up to sell anything other than ready-made sets, most of which are poor quality.
In general you will need primary and secondary colors of paint + black and white. There are many brands most of which will offer student grade or artist grade ( mainly different because of amount of pigment ) priced between $4.00 to $100.00 per tube (yeah some top brand oil purples cost that much!)
Brushes available in a variety of bristles and styles vary widely in price and quality from a few bucks into hundreds. Different brushes for different media.
Canvas, paper, panels, solvents, palettes, easels, media to make paint dry faster or slower, gloss or matte, and much more.
In the art world you truly get what you pay for so price is an indicator of quality.
All in all I really recommend finding a art store to not only save you money but to make sure you get what she will use and be happy with.
If your town has a college which offers art classes there is bound to be a retailer who can help.
