What is the significance of jamming a fifty pence piece into a bottle cork?
Recently I enjoyed a bottle of champagne with my other half for celebration of exam results. As we were drinking, her grandmother cut a wedge into the cork and wedged a 50 pence piece into it. She said it would be to remember the bottle we had for our results. I’ve never heard of this tradition before, and was wondering what the significance of it is.
Can anybody enlighten me?
